How to use the Anagram Solver

An anagram uses every letter you type, once each. This tool lists the words that do that for your letters. It answers a narrower question than the Word Unscrambler, which also shows shorter words made from only some of them.

  1. Type all of your letters into the Your letters box, up to 15 of them.
  2. If a letter is missing or doubtful, type ? or * in its place. Each blank counts as one of the letters and can stand for any letter; up to two blanks count.
  3. To keep only some anagrams, open More options and fill in Starts with, Ends with or Contains.
  4. Press Search. You get one list of words as long as your letters, highest score first. Show more adds 100 words at a time.

Tips for better results

  • Count the letters you typed. Every one must be used, so a typing slip leaves no anagram, and the page then suggests checking your letters or adding a blank.
  • When nothing comes back, change one doubtful letter to ?. The length stays the same while the search widens, which is safer than dropping a letter.
  • Use Contains when you know a run of letters that belongs in the answer. The letters must sit together and in that order.
  • Starts with and Ends with suit a known prefix or suffix. Those letters must still come from your own tiles or a blank, because a filter never adds letters to your rack.

Questions and answers

What counts as an anagram here?

A word from the list that is exactly as long as your letters and uses each of them once. A blank counts as one letter, so a rack of seven tiles, one of them blank, gives seven-letter words. Words that use only some of the letters are not shown.

Which words does it search?

The tool uses the ENABLE word list, a list of words of 2 to 15 letters that is 168,551 words long here. It lacks some recent words and is not the official list of any game, so a game's own dictionary has the final say.

How are the results scored and ordered?

Each word is scored with the standard English Scrabble letter values, but a letter that a blank stands for adds nothing. Words are listed with the highest score first and, when scores match, from A to Z. The first 100 show at once.

Where does the search run?

In your browser. The word list is downloaded once, on your first search, and the search itself then runs on your own device. If you share a search, the link carries your letters in its address, and anyone who opens it sends that address to the site's host like any page request.
