Word Unscrambler
Type the letters you have, use ? or * for a blank tile, and press Search to see every word they can make, longest first, each with its Scrabble score.
How to use the Word Unscrambler
The Word Unscrambler takes the letters you hold and lists every word that can be made from some or all of them. It suits Scrabble and other tile games, where the usual question is what a rack can play.
- Type your tiles into the Your letters box, up to 15 letters. Anything that is not a letter or a blank mark is ignored.
- Type ? or * for a blank tile. Only the first two blanks count; any further ones are dropped.
- To narrow the search, open More options and fill in Starts with, Ends with, Contains or Length. You can use several of them at once.
- Press Search. The words are grouped by length, longest first. Each group shows its first 100 words, and Show more adds 100 more.
Tips for better results
- If you hold a blank tile, type ? for it instead of guessing a letter. A blank can stand for any letter.
- To play through a letter already on the board, add that letter to your rack, then use Contains or Starts with to keep words built around it.
- Use Length when the gap on the board has a fixed size, and Ends with when a word must finish on certain letters.
- Compare scores before you choose. A word that leans on a blank may score less than a shorter word made only from real tiles.
- Look past the first group. The longest words come first, but a shorter word with high-value letters can be worth more.
Questions and answers
Which words does it search?
It searches the ENABLE word list, which holds 168,551 words of 2 to 15 letters. The list lacks some recent words and is not the official list of any game, so check a game's own rules before you rely on a word.
How is a word scored?
Each letter adds its value from the standard English Scrabble letter values, so common letters are worth little and Q and Z the most. A letter that a blank stands in for scores zero. Bonus squares on a board are not counted.
How many blanks can I use?
Up to two blanks count, which is the number in a standard Scrabble set. A third ? or * is dropped when the search runs, and the address shows only the letters that were kept.
What does Contains match?
Contains matches letters that sit together, in the order you typed them. Contains ate matches plate and crate but not treat, which holds the same three letters apart.
Where does the search run, and can I share it?
The search runs in your browser. The word list is downloaded once, when you first search, and later searches reuse it. A search you bookmark or share carries its letters and filters in the link's address, and opening that link sends that address to the site's host like any other page request.
